Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, previously stated that AI would gradually replace software engineers, and mastering AI-based tools would become essential. However, in recent remarks, Altman seems to have shifted his focus from the complete replacement of programmers to enhancing their productivity and helping them generate code more quickly and effectively.
He stated, “I would rather have a programmer become 10 times more productive than see full automation happen.” This statement reflects Altman’s changing view on the future of work, focusing on how AI can amplify human productivity rather than replacing people entirely.
Similarly, Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, has made comments suggesting that with the rapid growth of AI, programming might no longer have a future. He recommends pursuing alternative career paths in fields like biology, agriculture, education, or manufacturing instead.
However, Altman still believes in the power of AI to enhance and accelerate workflows in programming and predicts these transformations will occur soon.
Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft, also echoed this sentiment, stating that while AI may eventually automate many jobs, programmers, biologists, and energy specialists will be spared from this revolution because these fields are complex enough that AI will not be able to fully automate them.
